Meteora, Greece, is a breathtaking destination known for its unique rock formations and centuries-old monasteries perched atop towering cliffs. This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most significant monastic centres in Greece, where monks sought solitude and spiritual enlightenment since the 14th century.
What makes Meteora special is its dramatic landscape—massive sandstone pillars rise nearly 400 meters above the valley, creating a surreal, almost otherworldly scenery. The monasteries, built with incredible skill, seem to defy gravity, offering stunning panoramic views.
Visitors can explore six active monasteries, each preserving Byzantine art, religious relics, and centuries-old traditions. Beyond its religious significance, Meteora is also a haven for adventure seekers, offering hiking, rock climbing, and photography opportunities. Whether you’re drawn by its spirituality, history, or natural beauty, Meteora is a place that leaves a lasting impression on every traveler.
When to visit
Visiting during spring (April to June) or fall (September to October) is ideal, as these seasons offer mild weather and fewer crowds

Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron
The largest and oldest monastery in Meteora, Greece, was founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite. Perched atop a towering rock formation, it once served as a spiritual and scholarly centre for Orthodox monks. Today, it houses religious artefacts, manuscripts, and frescoes, offering visitors a glimpse into Byzantine monastic life.
Open from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM; closed on Tuesdays.
Holy Monastery of Varlaam
The second-largest in Meteora, Greece, was established in the 16th century by monks Theophanis and Nektarios Apsarades. It stands on a dramatic rock pillar and features exquisite frescoes by the renowned painter Frangos Katelanos. Once accessible only by rope ladders and pulleys, it now welcomes visitors via a stone staircase, showcasing its rich Orthodox heritage.

Holy Monastery of Rousanou
Built in the 16th century, is one of the six active monasteries in Meteora, Greece. Dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ, it is perched on a lower rock formation, making it more accessible than others. Today, it functions as a convent, with nuns preserving its stunning frescoes and rich Orthodox traditions.

Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapafsas
A 16th-century monastery in Meteora, Greece, is known for its compact, multi-level structure built on a narrow rock. It houses remarkable frescoes by the famous Cretan painter Theophanes Strelitzas. Offering breathtaking views, it remains an active place of worship and spiritual retreat for Orthodox monks.

Holy Monastery of St. Stephen
This one is unique for its easy access via a small bridge rather than steep stairs. Originally founded in the 14th century, it was later transformed into a convent and is now home to a community of nuns. Renowned for its peaceful atmosphere, it features beautiful frescoes and a stunning katholikon dedicated to Saint Charalambos.

Holy Monastery of Holy Trinity
Perched dramatically atop a solitary rock in Meteora, Greece, was founded in the 15th century. Known for its breathtaking views and its appearance in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only, it was historically accessible only by rope ladders and baskets. Today, visitors climb a long staircase to explore its exquisite frescoes and rich Orthodox heritage.
